I saw response on how to ready scissure simply I do not know anything near welding. If I apply Duct tape on the outside of the hood, will the engine heat affect it? I do not intendance nearly looks of the repair but wish to end the large crack from spreading

Welcome to TBN....................

The hood on my JD rider also cracked. My passenger hood is fiberglass then I bought a can of Bondo at the auto parts store, drilled a hole at the stop of the crack to finish spreading, sanded it down and Vee'd the crevice a little, mixed up and filled with Bondo. A couple hours later on I sanded information technology down, primed and repainted with JD light-green rattle tin can. At v' away yous tin can't see any impairment. After all, its just a mower and I wasn't going to spend hundreds on a new hood. I at present have another crack to set up from someone standing on the hood instead of using a ladder but I won't mention whatever names. Maybe this winter I'll work on that.
If your hood is metal, drill a minor pigsty where the crack ends to stop it from spreading and Bondo it. Or if you take a torch you can braze information technology using low heat. Estrus may warp the thin metallic though.
Body shops employ Bondo on metal and fiberglass all the fourth dimension.

If it is just a crack I accept had expert luck with a product chosen "rapid fix". Won't get out the nice smooth appearance that bondo can, Kind of expensive but like shooting fish in a barrel to use.

Fusor makes the existent repair plastics for plastic panels. Get it at the auto paint supply. The counter guy will know which blazon best matches your hood's plastic. Yous should also become some onetime screen or the newer drywall border tape, the plastic mesh blazon. Have the hood off if you can as it;s and so much easier to work on and do a better chore . Clean the dorsum carefully so VEE the crack and drill finish holes on each end then take a grinder and carefully clean off the back an inch all around the crack. Have a file and gouge **** out of the within inside that cleaned surface area. Make deep scratches in some sort of cross hatch X design and the rougher the better. Then scrape the top side up similarly.
Now that it's set up take some fusor and push it into the crack and holes and cover the rough area. Over again on the back button the screen (cut to the same size as the roughed up area) into the fusor. Become information technology in there dainty and deep and and then go spread some more fusor on top of the screen to completely bury information technology. Allow it dry out so flip the hood over and smear fusor onto the crack to comprehend completely the whole roughed upward area on top of the hood. Let it harden and so sand the top with 80 grit and end with 220. Leave the within solitary, nobody sees information technology. Once you get the repair nice and polish put on a few coats of SANDABLE primer and gently sand with an old slice of 220. Utilize a block of wood and then it sands flat. And then paint. The reason you lot need the mesh in the repair is to assist concord it against all the heavy vibration those minor engines put on it.
Now if the mower is erstwhile and on its fashion out there is a quick and dirty ......FUGLY mode. Simply stop drill VEE it out and then go some 3m 5200 (habitation depot). Take a piece of duct tape then make clean the back side of the hood and put the record on there. Nice and long leaving the bottom hanging downwardly a bit. Pump the cleft total of 5200 and smear and push it down so information technology penetrates and spreads beyond the crack on the inside . Then feather as best you can with a plastic body spatula. Let it dry a 24-hour interval. 5200 doesn't sand well at all and won't feather well at all but although it will look like Frankenstein it volition never break again. You might go paint / primer to stick to information technology, maybe not though and it won't be pretty. Fugly.........
Either way you lot become it will work just more time consuming and ;)pretty or fugly and fast it will concur up for you. Pick your poison.

Older JD lawn tractors had hoods made of ABS plastic which were quite brittle. There is an ABS (acrylonitrile, butadiene, styrene) cement that was used in pipe used to attach mobile homes to septic systems. This may still be found in older hardware stores. I used this together with wire mesh bracing (gutter baby-sit) to repair a 262 hood. Best of luck.

I but repaired mine with a fiber drinking glass kit from auto zone for 20 bucks. That stuff is very strong I might use more of information technology to beef up other parts that are flimsy
